The efector PMD Sensor - A New Price-to-Performance Benchmark for Distance Measurement
The award-winning efector PMD laser sensor from ifm efector provides non-contact distance measurement with a 10-meter sensing range. Contained in a compact, robust metal housing that measures only 42mm x 42mm, the sensor is designed for industrial applications and mounts easily in applications with limited space. The sensor’s large 4-digit alphanumeric display precisely indicates the measured distance within a few millimeters. The display allows the sensor to be programmed for two setpoints or for one setpoint and one analog ouput. The display can also provide distance values in inches, millimeters or meters.
Time-of-Flight sensing principle provides reliable optical distance measurement
The sensing technology is based on the “time-of-flight” principle. The time it takes the transmitted light from the sensor to travel to the object and back to the sensor is directly proportional to the distance traveled. The sensor incorporates a smart-pixel receiver element that is a “System-on-Chip” design. Both sensor element and signal evaluation electronics are integrated on a 0.25mm square CMOS silicon chip called a Photonic Mixer Device (PMD). The integration of PMD technology on a system-on-chip has enabled ifm efector to produce a distance measurement sensor in a housing that is smaller and less expensive than traditional systems. The sensor is a visible red Class II laser and features integrated extraneous light suppression.
Designed for a variety of applications
ifm’s distance measurement sensor suits a broad range of applications. efector PMD can operate as a long-range background suppression sensor. Its laser light source enables the sensor to accurately detect small objects at long distances.
Using dual switch points, efector PMD can monitor the position of an object in a continuous process, such as web monitoring. The sensor can be programmed to provide two separate outputs that will activate at preset distances or programmed to provide an analog output that indicates the diameter of the roll being sensed.
efector PMD achieves absolute distance measurement by providing an analog signal (4…20mA) that is proportional to the object-to-sensor distance. The analog output can be scaled to fit applications including shclf-occupied detection found in automated storage and retrieval systems.
